Dearest Family,
My
companion, Elder Ellis, told me the other day that his favorite memory
of our first day here was when our teacher was in the middle of the
lesson, and then he explained to us (in Spanish) that we could take a 5
minute break to walk around, get a drink, or go to the bathroom. So I
instantly stood up and walked out of the room, while everyone else just
sat in the chairs, having NO IDEA what was going on. hahaha. And, in my
companions words "It was at that moment that I realized that my
companion knows words." Also, we convinced the new district that I am
from Guatemala and that I don't speak very much English. They believed
it for two days until we finally told them that I was from Idaho cause
we felt bad for lying. Moral of the story: already knowing some Spanish
is awesome. And I have been blessed. But really study Preach My
Gospel. I wish i had read more of it before I came here. It will help
you so much. And read the missionary handbook. Obedience brings
blessings. EXACT obedience, brings miracles.
This week was our teacher Hermano Russell's last week teaching us,
because he got a promotion. So now he is in charge of coordinating an
entire other zone. But he has helped me so much. He helped me love the
gospel, the scriptures, the people, and the work. With him leaving we
didn't get to teach our investigator Antonio anymore. Luckily he got
baptized. Then we got a new investigator, Eloy, taught him 2 lessons,
and now he is leaving too. But we should know who our actual new teacher
is next week.
Oh, and Elder Labar, Elder Ellis and I, will be the new Zone Leaders
starting on Sunday. Pray for us! Our old zone leaders are heading out. I
am going to miss them so much. They used to be our roommates before we
got switched into the trio. Elder Daniel Rich and Elder Todd Griffiths
will be greatly missed. Along with all of the other elders in their
district. I love these guys so much.
I was getting pretty nostalgic yesterday because the BYU football season
started off and i wasn't there with my friends like I was just a year
ago. But then in class, our inspired teacher, Hermano Defiguerido, just
had us watch a talk given by Jeffrey R. Holland in the MTC some years
ago. And we were to think of the question "What do I want to become on
my mission? or What does Heavenly Father want me to become?" In his
talk, he even talked about not letting sports games detract from our
mission, so there went my desires to be at the football game. And this
is what I wrote down from his talk: "I want my mission to mean
EVERYTHING to me. It will never come again. I want to enhance every
hour. I will have HEROIC effort. And have no regrets. I am now doing the
most important thing i will ever do in this world. I will take it up a
notch. I will teach of Christ. I will teach of Faith. I will teach
Repentance. My mission will be hard, because salvation is not a cheap
experience. It is not easy. It was never meant to be easy. It was not
easy for the Son of God Himself. I will not feel sorry for myself. And I
will be a Witness."
I know that I am where i need to be. This mission will be the
greatest thing that has ever happened to me, and it will prepare me for
my future more than anything else. I am so grateful to be here. Thank
you all for your examples. I love you all so much. I miss you like the
Bible misses the Book of Mormon during the Great Apostasy. I love this
work.
Love,
Elder Romney Vaughn Hansen
